Women in vascular surgery have made important strides, but too many early-career women still don’t get the mentorship and support they need to stay and thrive in the field. From 2015 to 2022, women increased from 11% to 16% of the vascular surgery workforce. Yet female vascular surgeons are 2.05 times more likely to leave practice than their male counterparts. Women vascular surgeons are driving innovation, mentorship, and better care, but retention requires intentional investment.

That’s why we’re building on the momentum of last year’s first-ever
women-focused Vascular Care for the Underserved award by partnering with the SVS Women's Section to invest in mentorship and career development for women vascular surgeons, particularly those in the early stages of their careers.

This Women’s History Month,
your support will help us raise $30,000 to support travel grants to provide opportunities for education, mentorship, and network-building at a critical stage of career development for women in vascular surgery.

Your gift today honors the women in vascular surgery leading progress – and helps empower the next generation with the professional development and support they deserve.

Now is the moment to ensure women don’t just enter vascular surgery - they stay and lead

SVS Foundation: Supporting the Next Generation of Women Vascular Surgeons

With only 16% of the vascular surgery workforce made up of women, representation for female vascular surgeons still lags in our specialty. Addressing this gap requires intentional investment and collaboration to remove barriers, foster community, and support long-term career success.

That’s why the partnership between the SVS Foundation and the SVS Women's section is so important. By aligning targeted funding with mentorship and professional development, this collaboration helps create the support system female vascular surgeons need to stay, grow, and lead.

Since 1987, we have supported over
37 women vascular surgeons with at least $3,960,500 in funding to help empower careers, advance discovery, and strengthen the future of our field.

Last year, we deepened that commitment by investing $20,000 to women's vascular health through a Vascular Care for the Underserved grant designed to address the unique vascular health needs of women and combat the longstanding exclusion of women from vascular research and clinical trials.

The SVS Foundation remains committed to ensuring women are represented in vascular surgery and that women’s vascular health is no longer left behind.
